Executive Council Report

 

New Executive Director – George S. Rice, began with APCO on May 1st.  He has an extensive background in association management.

 

TERT - The APCO International Board of Officers announced that the joint APCO/NENA “Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce” initiative is moving forward. Following a meeting on Friday, May 5 in Washington, DC with the NENA Board of Officers, your Board of Officers submitted the following five individuals as representatives of APCO to work on this initiative. Both APCO and NENA are in agreement that this initiative would be identified as a joint effort between the two organizations and that the official name of the joint task force would be “National TERT Joint Initiative.” The task force will be Co-Chaired by Mr. Brent Lee (representing APCO) and Mr. Ron Bonneau (representing NENA).

The Executive Directors of APCO and NENA are currently in the process of developing a draft Memorandum of Understanding which will memorialize the joint understandings reached by APCO and NENA with respect to this initiative.

 

We want to express our sincere appreciation for the overwhelming response to our call for volunteers for service on this task force. The Board received over 45 resumes from association members expressing interest in this project

 

Project RETAINS - Acting President Elect Willis Carter made a motion to approve the request of Bill Carrow to teach Project RETAINS at the NENA Annual Conference.   Motion passed.

􀂾 Staff will conduct research on copyrighting the Project RETAINS material and work with attorney to resolve the issue of whether or not we can use the material as a member benefit.

􀂾 Staff will prepare a proposal for the management of Project RETAINS in the APCO Institute for review by the Board of Officers at the next meeting.

 

DC Office - Acting First Vice President Chris Fischer made a motion to direct staff to sign the nine month lease extension for the DC office. Acting President Elect Willis Carter seconded the motion. A verbal vote was taken and the motion passed with no opposition.

 

NCMEC - Staff attended a meeting this week at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The purpose of the meeting is to form a steering committee to create call center best practices in cases of missing children. In addition to NCMEC and APCO, the group consisted of representatives from the National Emergency Number Association (NENA), the National Academy on Emergency Dispatch (NAED), the Fox Valley (TN) Technical College , and AMBER Alert. During the meeting, the group created a mission statement and goals and began developing an action plan. Before any work begins, the Board of Officers will have the opportunity to review a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Staff will report further as the committee moves forward.

 

Fire Communications Training - The new APCO Institute Fire Service Communications, First Edition course is being released today. We are extremely excited and proud to be able to offer this dynamic new course to our membership.

 

Website - The Membership department is re-designing our membership pages. Our goal is to 1) update the look and feel of the pages; 2) make the flow of information easier for members follow; and 3) begin the ground work for incorporating more Member-only pages with the AMS. We hope to have the new look up in the next 30 days. We look forward to hearing any and all feedback that you have.

We have sold 768 booths (not including comps and trades) for the Orlando Conference which represents over 92 percent of the floor. We are 10 booths away from beating last year's record of 778. Revenue is $1.49 million.

 

We will be holding a Grand Finale Giveaway Party during the last hour of the tradeshow. We have received many prizes so far to giveaway including public safety chess sets, an ipod/video, an XM Roady and several other smaller items.

 

The 2007 Winter Summit will be held February 12 – 14. Call for Papers will open June 15. Please visit www.apcointl.com/wintersummit2007 for details and to submit a presentation.

 

The 73rd Annual Conference and Exposition is scheduled to be held August 5 – 9, 2007 in Baltimore, MD. The theme for the event will be “Discover a Home in the Harbor for Public Safety Communications.” Call for Papers for the Baltimore Conference will be open July 1.

The Call Center Standards Committee is proud to provide you with the completed draft of the newly developed "Minimum Training Standards for

Public Safety Communications First Level Supervisor."    This draft has

been posted on the APCO website for comment through June 30th.     It

should be noted that application for copyright has been completed by the APCO Standards office.  We request that you please disseminate the attached working document to the appropriate members in your Chapters for comment or

have them review the document on-line.   All comment should be forwarded

APCO announced last week that Elsevier Public Safety will be the official publisher of Public Safety Communications/APCO Bulletin.

The agreement between APCO and Elsevier Public Safety is a long-term agreement, in which Elsevier Public Safety will publish, produce, market, promote and sell the publication. APCO will continue to define the editorial vision and content of the publication. 

The first issue under this partnership will be the September 2006 issue.
